2020 NCECA STUDENT INTERESTS PROPOSALS
MULTIVALENT: Clay, Mindfulness and Memory NCECA’s 54th annual conference Richmond, Virginia March 25-28, 2020
NCECA’s 54th annual conference in Richmond will explore ways that ceramic artists are charting new pathways from the complex meanings of our interwoven histories. NCECA is particularly interested in presenting programming that enriches the theme of this conference, MULTIVALENT: Clay, Mindfulness and Memory. Ceramic art’s diversity of expression and continuous invention generates affinities that extend human imagination. NCECA’s 54th annual conference will explore ways that ceramic artists are charting new pathways from the complex meanings of our interwoven histories.
Student Interests Proposal Deadline: OCTOBER 9, 2019, (11:59pm EDT)
Student Interests includes presentations on student-centered concerns. Sessions may be proposed and presented by students as well as those who are not currently students. This programming strand may address a range of topics, including, but not limited to: expanding diversity in the field, developing “green” studio practices, critical discourse in ceramic art; professional practices (documenting, writing about, and pricing your work; developing a resume, approaching galleries, building a customer base, networking, social media, developing a website, or choosing and entering shows); post-graduation options in the ceramic field (residencies, post-baccalaureate programs, fellowships and apprenticeships); how to choose a graduate program; career paths in the ceramic field.
NCECA’s Student Directors at Large will work with NCECA’s Programs Director to review and select programming from proposals submitted through this call. Additionally, NCECA reserves the right to curate and develop programming that strengthens the quality and range of experiences related to the conference theme, sense of place, and other strategic objectives.
ELIGIBILITY Everyone is eligible for consideration. Individual participation is generally limited to only one presentation per conference.
APPLICATION PROCESS All proposals must be submitted using NCECA’s Online Submittal process (a link to the form is provided below). Proposals related to the Conference theme of Multivalent: Clay, Mindfulness and Memory will receive preference.
***IMPORTANT***Although the system that supports this submission form does not currently include an active word counter, NCECA asks all applicants to note and adhere to word count limitations that are identified in open fields.
The best way to do this for most applicants will be to compose responses to these open fields first utilizing the word-processing software on your computer or device and take advantage of the included word-counting tools.
Once composed, proofed, and counted, you can copy your text from your local word processing software into the appropriate fields in the form. Please note that in some instances, special characters copied from word processing platforms may be converted in the form system. For this reason, we caution applicants on the use of special characters where not absolutely necessary.
NCECA reserves the right to exclude applications that disregard word count limits and to edit any and all text submitted for reasons ranging from space allocation to style, fluency of language, and grammatical concerns.
Applicants are strongly advised to prepare the following BEFORE starting the online submission process. Your online submittal form must include the following or it will not be considered. (ONLY .doc, .docx, or .pdf files will be accepted)
● Name/contact information will auto-populate once you log in to the NCECA database.
● Proposer Resume (2-page limit, upload as .doc, .docx or .pdf, not to exceed 2MB)
● If your proposal is accepted the abstract, short bio/s, and headshot/s will be used for website and print publications.
● Proposer Head shot (upload as jpg, 100dpi 2”x3”)
● Proposer Short Bio (Limit 50 words) Include school and level of study if a student.
● Non-Presenting Proposer Contact Information (optional to be completed only if NOT a presenter included in the proposal) Please include Name, Cell Phone, Email.
● Presentation Format - 30, 60, or 90 minute lecture, Panel, or Discussion (Panels are limited to no more than three panelists plus a moderator) (Discussions may include up to one moderator and one additional participant for a total of no more than 5 participants)
● Proposal Title
● Proposal Description - a thorough description of what the presentation entails (Limit 325 words)
● Program Guide Abstract - very brief and thought-provoking. (Limit 50 words)
● Co-presenter (if applicable) – to include name, email, short bio and headshot. Include school and level of study if a student.
● Resume (2-page limit, upload as .doc, .docx or .pdf, not to exceed 2MB)
● Panelists (if applicable) – to include name, email, short bio and headshot for EACH. Include school and level of study if a student.
● IMAGES - Up to 10 images (Only images that directly reference the actual proposal) (upload as jpg only, each image no larger than 800 KB. Image details to include: Image Title Relevance to presentation – (Limit 50 words) Brief Image description – (Limit 50 words - to include Artist name, title, date, type of clay, firing, photo credit if applicable.)

Introductions - Is there a special mentor, colleague or friend who attends the conference that you would like to recommend to provide an introduction to your presentation? (NCECA reserves the right to assign individuals to introduce presentations when this field is left blank or the recommended person is unavailable.) Please provide the name, cell phone, and email.
ADJUDICATION A committee including NCECA Student Director at Large and two other board members will review proposals. NCECA will notify you of the Board’s decision by email as soon as possible.
HONORARIUM Student Interest presenters who are accepted and hold a NCECA membership are eligible to receive a complimentary full conference registration. Honoraria are not provided for these presentations. To access your NCECA profile, login HERE to confirm that your membership status is current. If it is not, please purchase or renew your membership so that your conference registration can be completed. Presenters must understand that they are providing content as a service to the field. By accepting the invitation to present, presenters’ acknowledge NCECA’s rights to document their presentations and make available for publication presentation and written materials presented during the conference.
